Strawberry’s and cream, rhubarb and custard, Jack Daniel’s and coke; some things were just made to be together. Other combinations are far less obvious but when brilliantly blended can surprise and delight.

The pairing of Maziar Namvar’s Audio Soul Project and the highly-regarded Urbantorque label is an example of the former, in the words of iDJ Magazine it’s “a match made in underground house heaven.” ‘Product of Modern Living’ is the second instalment of this fine partnership following on from ‘Satellite,’ a release that drew attention from a diverse collection of DJs including Danny Howells, Ben Watt and Pete Heller. The three tracks on this EP exemplify the second type of combination: an unexpected, novel fusion of disparate flavours that just works a treat.

Opening track ‘Caramel’ takes smatterings of the contemporary electro sounds and blends them wonderfully with a good old fashioned approach to making house music. It’s a textured track that cleverly builds and somehow sounds dirty and charming at the same time. A sugary-sweet indulgence; it tastes good, but you know it’s bad!

On the flip-side you’ll find ‘Wait for You’, a slightly deeper affair on which Mazi again uses electro sounds to his own effect to create an enticing, drifting record. The second B-side cut gives space for Urbantorque new boy Sergio Muñoz to display his undoubted talent. His ‘Toffee Mix’ of ‘Caramel’ strips things back for a deeper and atmospheric interpretation. Watch out for the Venezuelan’s own material to be released later this year.

Urbantorque and Audio Soul Project make a fine combination, and together they’ve served-up a mouth-watering platter. Bon appetite!
